Mineralica 2026 - 2 (english)
This issue brings together three features on localities that continue to yield new discoveries despite a long collecting history. The focus is on rare minerals, recent finds, and in part previously unpublished photography.
Wittichen (Black Forest) – Frank Oppenländer
A portrait of this remote side valley, once a centre of silver and cobalt mining. The feature documents some of the rarest minerals of the district using first-rate specimens and, in part, entirely new, previously unpublished images. It also presents the recently discovered locality at the Aichhalder Mühle.
Ishikawa (Fukushima Prefecture, Japan) – Kōta Harihara
The pegmatites of this town rank among Japan's richest sources of rare-element minerals. For this feature, the author revisited the historic mining area — a place where, during the Second World War, uranium was sought for a nuclear weapons programme that ultimately never materialised.
Drammen (Southern Norway) – Máximo Alfonso Rojo, Gabija Maršalkaitė and Adrien Sautier
Long known for its garnets, this region has produced an unexpected find: iridescent andradite with crystal faces shimmering in blue, green, violet and gold — the first known iridescent garnets in Europe.
The issue closes with a preview of the next number, featuring a short account of the history of the Munich mineral dealer Maucher, which is closing its doors after more than a hundred years.
