Is it the rarity or the aesthetic appeal of its finds, its scientific relevance, or the stories that accumulate around it over time? In most cases, it is not just one of these aspects, but their interaction. It is precisely this field of tension to which the present issue of Mineralica is devoted.

Johann Zenz takes us to the south of the Argentine province of Mendoza, into the rugged, expansive landscape around San Rafael. For decades, the vividly colored agates found there have fascinated collectors around the world. His contribution not only highlights the geological foundations of these exceptional occurrences, but also the often demanding collecting conditions—and, not least, a surprisingly conflict-laden history of discovery that shows how closely enthusiasm, claims of ownership, and passion can be intertwined.

A broad historical arc is traced by the extensive article by Antonio Miglioli on the tourmalines of the island of Elba. Hardly any locality has shaped the history of mineralogy as profoundly as this small Mediterranean island—not least as the type locality of elbaite. Miglioli combines geology, tectonics, and pegmatite formation with a detailed examination of crystal forms, colors, and terminations. The result is a multifaceted overview of a classic collecting area that today has become exceedingly rare.

The tone becomes very personal in the final contribution, which focuses on the Kaiserbründl at the Gratlspitz in Tyrol. What began for Thomas Wimmer as a search for attractive lapidary material developed over the years into an intensive engagement with microminerals and mineral photography. The article compellingly illustrates how a collector’s perspective can change—and how even seemingly inconspicuous dumps can become remarkable localities.

As different as these three contributions may be, they share one common thread: they tell of close observation. Of perseverance. And of the joy of rediscovering familiar places and materials again and again.
