Cavnic
📍 Cavnic, Maramureș County, Romania
Cavnic lies east of Baia Mare in Maramureș, northern Romania. The town is first recorded in 1336, and its veins of lead, zinc, copper, silver and gold, formed by Miocene volcanism, were mined until the 2000s.
Collectors know Cavnic for sphalerite, quartz, rhodochrosite and tetrahedrite, often grown together on one piece, and for baryte and calcite. Older labels give the locality as Kapnik or Kapnikbánya, its German and Hungarian names.
