Calcite and Hematite
Leiping Mine, Leiping, Guiyang Co., Chenzhou, Hunan, China
Two generations of calcite build this cluster, each marked by hematite in its own way. The first generation forms blocky crystals to 5 cm, triangular in outline and capped by three broad rhombohedral faces. A fine coating of hematite gives them a matte, dark gray, almost black surface, and their faces carry step-like striations. Around them grew a second generation of smaller crystals, translucent and glowing orange to deep red from hematite inclusions. They follow the edges of the gray crystals in stepped, sawtooth rows, all in parallel growth, and frame each one like a border of red glass. Between them sit a few lighter, honey-colored to colorless crystals and patches of red hematite dust. The contrast between the matte gray crystals and the lustrous red rims gives the piece a strong graphic presence. Among specimens from the Leiping Mine in Guiyang County, Hunan, few show both generations this clearly. A large cabinet specimen of 23 cm, in very good condition.
