Brazil is one of the main sources of gem crystals. The pegmatites of Minas Gerais yield tourmaline, aquamarine, quartz and rare phosphates, Ouro Preto adds imperial topaz, and the basalts of Rio Grande do Sul amethyst geodes and agate.
